Lemon balm is a lemon scented type of mint. It has been known to reduce stress and anxiety, calm the stomach and promote sleep. Little did I know what I was getting when I purchased this plant. It will now be a staple in my herb garden. Read more to find out the many benefits.
Lemon balm plants can usually be found in the garden center of your local store. I happen to purchase this because I heard somewhere that it may help repel mosquitoes. It has citronellal in it, which mimics the well known citronella oil. Catnip is also good for mosquito repellent, but that's another story. For a repellent crush some leaves and rub them on your skin, or sometimes I walk around with sprigs of lemon balm or catnip tucked in my shoes or pocket while in the garden. I'm pretty sure my husband thinks I look like a wild woman with twigs and leaves all over. But hey, it works!
Another way to enjoy lemon balm is by making a tea out of it. I find it quit delicious, slightly lemony, slightly minty. I feel very calm and relaxed after consuming it. We all know I need that after a day at work, don't most of us? I fill a tea diffuser with dry or fresh leaves then fill cup with boiling water, nothing special. Try lemon balm tea if you need help with the following:
Lemon balm is very easy to grow. It doesn't send out shoots and spread like mint, it grows in a small bush form. I have hardly watered mine and it's still growing like crazy. Add lemon balm to your medicinal herb cabinet, you'll be thankful you did. If you cannot grow your own buy lemon balm tea bags here.
Have you tried lemon balm? Have any different ways to use it? I would love to hear from you.
