You may notice the Staghorn Sumac plant growing all over in the fall. The Native Americans used this all the time as a way to get vitamin C. It's free and abundant this time of year. Why not take advantage of it's sour/tart flavor? I was surprised the first time I tried it, it's pretty good actually. I guess it's not really lemonade, but uh, stagade? I 'll teach you how to make it.
You will need:
- 4-6 Staghorn heads, just like above. Choose bright red ones like this.
- Cold water
- Cheese cloth or fine towel/t-shirt something to strain through.
- Sweetener if you prefer, soaking with Stevia leaves could work really well.
- Gently rinse Staghorn to remove any debris. No need to worry about every little thing, the last straining step will remove it all.
- Place in 1 gallon or similar pitcher.
- Fill with cold water, use cold not hot as hot will destroy the beneficial vitamin C.
- Let it soak overnight.
5. In the morning, strain through a thin towel or cheesecloth.
6. Add a sweetener if you prefer. Honey is good. I didn't add anything. I prefer the flavor without. I think next time I will try making it with some mint as well. Yummy!
